Van de Ven Double Halts Everton's Unbeaten Streak at Brand New Stadium

Micky van de Ven found the net twice as Spurs extended their winning streak in away games in the top division and handed the Toffees their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were undefeated in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having left Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the conclusion of last season.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman pounced twice from corners in the opening 45 minutes to place their strong form at risk, and they were unable to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - headed home a final goal to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender believed he had levelled the tally a short while after Van de Ven's first goal, glancing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, missed a number of chances, while Vicario made a succession of excellent stops to ensure the London club went five away games unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the VAR stepped in, advising Craig Pawson to check the goal on the screen and the official decided that the winger and the attacker were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory moves the manager's team up to third in the division, a handful of points off north London rivals and table-toppers Arsenal.

Everton stay in 14th position and are half a dozen points ahead of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender fulfils duties at each end of pitch

Following a drab weekday display in the Champions League against the French side, where they mustered a mere attempts on goal, the manager chose Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The summer signing was unable to make much of an impact before being replaced for the substitute after an hour on the field, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Centre-back Van de Ven transformed into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Spurs' opening strike came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball toward the face of goal for an unmarked Van de Ven to head home.

And the captain - stepping up as captain in the Argentine's unavailability - notched his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to head home.

The Dutchman was equally impressive in defensive duties, combining effectively with his defensive colleague as the duo dealt superbly with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Everton missing striker's instinct

Everton's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it appears the freshness may have worn off somewhat and fans headed to the exits after Sarr's final goal for Tottenham.

The break in Everton's winning streak at home won't be a major worry for the manager, but their attacking woes are.

Beto and the other striker - the Everton's two recognised centre-forwards - had netted just one league goal combined before Sunday's outing.

And they were failed to add to that miserable record on a damp and dreary evening on in Liverpool.

Beto's form was summed up when he chose to bicycle-kick a clear chance from near the goal, even with having room and time to readjust for a simpler shot that would have tested Vicario.

Barry, as well, failed to make an impact after replacing the starter in the second half.

It wasn't for a shortage of chance. The majority of the home side's offensive moves came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who tirelessly delivered threatening balls into the Spurs penalty area.
