No fewer than 13 people perish and ninety-eight injured in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's key government projects.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine what caused this accident,” affirmed the head of state.

The president announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Major Initiative of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the former leader, whose term concluded the year before. This venture was closely associated with his government's economic agenda for the southern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The development of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic expansion of its role in public projects. They were built at an fast-tracked speed, beating expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently sparked ongoing apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an previous crash this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party urged an prompt halt in the development and management of all such projects.

This halt was requested while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the situation "demands prompt explanations."

In reaction, the national leader asserted that the train had been functioning in full accordance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and running of these vital undertakings.
