It is deeply saddening’: the way thirty captive white whales have become bargaining chips in dispute over animal cruelty.

Jelly Bean’s offspring Bertie Botts is an cute small “ham sandwich”. The whale Orion – called “Onion” – is a large but very loyal companion. Zephyr has “constant motion” and sways like a wiggly creature. Lillooet is the “loving presence” with a gentle spirit.

A group of thirty enclosed marine mammals in a Canadian amusement park have become pawns in a tussle between a shuttered park, public officials and animal rights activists.

But those closest to the whales say the heated discussion over their destiny often overlooks the individual traits of the whales who, after living their entire lives in captivity, have been closely studied by the caretakers who work with them regularly.

After the federal government disallowed the sale of the belugas to a foreign facility, the embattled amusement park near Niagara Falls where they are held threatened to euthanize them unless the federal government pays for the expense of keeping them alive. Canada’s fisheries minister has rejected that request, placing the 30 whales in an increasingly precarious situation.

Highly Cognitive Sea Creatures

Scientists say that beluga whales’ brain structure, along with their mimicry abilities, problem solving and social skills point to they are remarkably smart animals – something a former trainer learned first-hand.

Burgess spent several years as a beluga trainer, a role that required gaining confidence of the marine predators.

“Establishing those bonds over time takes a lot of regularity and a lot of love. At the outset, they’re very cautious of you,” she said. “Eventually, you gain shared confidence. And they start being more vulnerable with you. It’s just so extraordinary and rewarding.”

Burgess knew the whales were very smart, but she says she was nevertheless amazed by the details and idiosyncrasies in their personalities. She cultivated a particular love for a pair of whales with different personalities.

“Eve chose me. Cleo required effort,” she said. “Both transformed the way I perceive connection.”

Growing Opposition and Facility Decline

Her connection with the whales developed against a background of increasing societal concern to their confinement.

During her tenure at the attraction, seven belugas and the park’s single killer whale, the orca, passed away. In total, 19 belugas have died at the park since 2019, a toll which the park ascribes to age-related causes, but which activists say indicates the inadequate care in which they were housed.

The facility did not open to the visitors over the recent season, but the former trainer says she observed directly consequences of the closure. “Concrete is breaking off from the pools because they’re degrading and not being maintained. The whales are exploratory and so they pick it up and navigate with fragments in their mouth. It’s heartbreaking to see.”

The facility did not comment to a inquiry, but in the past claimed: “The whales … obtain far better veterinary services and constant supervision than any individual in the UK, or anywhere else.”

Uncertain Future and Potential Resolutions

The former employee was fired from the facility in the spring following the passing of a beluga, an unwell beluga the caretakers had to humanely kill. She said the facility thought particulars of the incident were shared to the media and she was let go shortly thereafter.

The uncertainty over the whales’ outcome has left her and current and former trainers in despair. She says the park’s threat to end the lives of its whales is a bargaining chip and is a “logistically impossible” task, adding any efforts to humanely kill even a one beluga would require “immense staff”, equipment and specialized tools.

“It’s impossible in hell the staff would ever do it,” she said.

Burgess backs calls for the whales to be removed right away from the park, with its deteriorating pools and shrinking team.

In the autumn, Canada’s government official turned down a request to export the whales to an overseas location.

“Granting the application would have meant a ongoing situation in confinement and a return to performance for audiences,” the official wrote. “As society, we know that whales are meant for the ocean, not in pools for our amusement. I could not in good conscience authorize an relocation that would prolong the situation these belugas have endured.”

But the former trainer said the official’s remarks reveal a broader lack of awareness of the circumstances of existence for belugas raised in confinement.

“The people needs to understand these are whales that have lived entirely in confinement and they will need human care for the rest of their years,” she said. “The public just don’t realize that it’s not as simple as saying ‘close it down’.”

Sanctuary Proposal and Ongoing Debate

As decision makers work to find a resolution, ideas have surfaced, some of which have little basis in reality. An idea called for the belugas to be released into the open waters of the Arctic – where whales are a primary resource of nourishment for Inuit communities.

A proposed protected area in the region of Nova Scotia, which has received official endorsement, has proven most controversial. The future site, which includes extensive space of protected cove, doesn’t yet exist. Proponents remain positive that it could eventually represent a sustainable solution for a number of the whales.

But, Burgess says, among trainers she’s spoken with, there is “skepticism there” about what she said is “simply an trial” in the whales’ future.

Some experts say the idea of a refuge represents a broader global shift away from zoos and aquariums and could represent a viable plan in the near future.
