Right-leaning responses to the partial release of documents involving the Epstein case have been mixed, with some supporters of the previous administration highlighting the prominent presence of Bill Clinton and additional Democrats in images, while different voices lamented how heavy censorship cast former President Trump and GOP members in a negative manner.
Justice Department Defends Redactions with Strong Hyperbole
Justice Department officials defended the heavily censored sections with fervent hyperbole. “Never in U.S. the nation's history has a President or the Justice Department been so transparent with the public about such a sensitive law enforcement matter,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page letter describing the censorship process.
Concerns Raised by Redactions
While the former president's identity and likeness are visible in some of the materials, the extensive black blocks prompt significant concerns about what may be concealed beneath them. Some Republicans swiftly demanded greater transparency.
“People are furious and disengaging,” posted Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie asserted the redactions violate the statute, and implied that a subsequent legislature may attempt to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, today’s document release grossly fails to adhere to both the intent and the letter of the act,” he continued.
Some Rightwing Figures Swing Behind the Disclosure
But, a segment of rightwing pundits and former President loyalists swung firmly behind the Justice Department's actions.
The disclosed materials—from a DOJ run by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes scores of documents that are completely redacted, and numerous of the individuals depicted in photographs have their faces blacked out.
Yet some are not, featuring high-profile individuals like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, in particular, allowed certain rightwing voices to launch the offensive.
“It’s pretty ironic how the Democrats wrongly accused Donald Trump of being a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to unveil documents that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” wrote right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“New documents show Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a woman that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 reason Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”
Clinton Spokesperson Releases Statement
Clinton has repeatedly said he was aware of zero illegal activity by Epstein and has not been accused to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The White House has not been hiding those documents for an extended period only to release them late on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña stated in a comment.
“The release is about shielding themselves from what comes next, or from what they will try and conceal permanently. Therefore they can release as many low-quality decades-old photos as they desire, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the statement added.
Broader Rightwing Commentary Remains Subdued
However, broader comment on the right was relatively muted following the disclosure, especially when compared with the vociferous demands for action that preceded the legislative vote to pass a law mandating the files' release.
The commentator, who not long ago accepted media access at the Defense Department, had been among the loudest proponents for a full disclosure. In February, she chastised the Justice Department generally and Bondi in particular after a set of rightwing influencers were given hard-copy folders of materials that contained little new data.
