Exploring The Four Spent the Day Together from Chris Kraus – A Renowned Writer Explores Fresh Territory

This latest work features characters chasing after new beginnings, struggling to escape addictions or abusive marriages, only to find hope curdling into violence. Meanwhile, she seems to be making her own fresh start, as this appears a novel form of writing – observational, authentically narrative. But then it proves to be filled with the familiar conflicts and aesthetics as earlier books.

Kraus began as an visual artist who transitioned to writing almost accidentally with her 1997 groundbreaking book I Love Dick, which was composed of missives to a distant beloved, converting intimate women's literature from humiliation into rebellion. As a reader drawn to crafted language of the variety that the author often disregards, I was captivated by the novelistic voice of the initial part. It exhibits a novel degree of detail that accommodates minutiae, like the container that the protagonist as a child pries out of frozen water at the start of the story, aided by her adored dad. "I found an ice toy!" she declares; "a lovely toy", he answers, "the nuanced interpretations of terms circulating in their speech like hard candy".
