A bettor profited close to $500,000 on the ouster of Venezuela's president shortly prior to it was officially announced, sparking debate about the possibility of profiting from non-public details of the event.
Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a blockchain-based service, that Nicolás Maduro would be removed from office by the close of the month surged in the time leading up to former President Trump stated on January 3rd that the Venezuelan leader had been apprehended.
A particular user, which joined the platform last month and made four bets, all on political events in Venezuela, profited a total of $436K from a starting bet of over $32,000.
It remains unclear. The user had only a blockchain identifier for identification.
Market statistics shows that participants put the odds of Maduro's exit at just a low 6.5 percent in the midday period of the prior Friday.
Yet the odds had jumped to over 10% by shortly before midnight and skyrocketed in the morning of January 3rd, pointing to a rapid movement in market sentiment right before the official statement was made.
"That trade has all the hallmarks of a transaction based on non-public details," commented a financial reform advocate.
A small number of other traders also made significant sums from predicting the capture.
Elected officials are beginning to pay attention.
Proposed legislation put forward on recently aims to prohibit public officials from making trades on prediction markets if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a wager.
Forecasting platforms have grown significantly in the past few years, with traders able to bet on everything from sports outcomes to current affairs.
This sector were examined under the previous administration. But it has received a warmer welcome during the Trump presidency.
Using confidential knowledge is a crime in the traditional financial markets, but there are less oversight in the forecasting arena.
An official representative for Kalshi said their site "has clear rules against trading on insider information of any form."
